‘Dukes of Hazzard’ actor and former Congressman Ben Jones dead at 84

 

Ben Jones, best known for playing Cooter Davenport in the hit TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at the age of 84.

According to his wife, Alma Viator, the actor and former U.S. Congressman died on Sunday after suffering a heart attack. She shared the sad news on social media, stating that Ben lived a full and happy life.

“I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed away from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair, waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees. Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much,” Alma Viator wrote alongside a photo.

Born on August 30, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, Ben Jones took steps towards a career in the entertainment business in college.

He majored in radio, television, and motion pictures at the University of North Carolina and acted in theatre.

Jones appeared in several productions, including Together for Days in 1972, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings in 1976, Smokey and the Bandit in 1977, and The Lincoln Conspiracy in 1977.

However, for many fans, Ben Jones will always be remembered as Cooter, the friendly mechanic from The Dukes of Hazzard. He appeared in 141 episodes of the popular show between 1979 and 1985, and Jones became one of its most familiar faces.

Still, there was more to life than acting for Ben Jones. After leaving Hollywood, he entered politics. Jones, a Democrat, first ran for Congress in 1986. He lost a close race at that time, but later, in 1989, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served two terms as a Congressman.

Later in life, he remained closely connected to The Dukes of Hazzard and the character that made him famous. And now, after his death, his legacy will be forever remembered in Hollywood.

World’s first surviving septuplets celebrate 26th birthday

 

In 1997 the world’s first septuplets were born to couple Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey in Iowa, U.S.

The birth of these special babies, who were born 9 weeks prematurely, attracted headlines around the world as the new parents were inundated with invites for interviews.

They ended up appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show to celebrate their first birthday and each received their own birthday cake. They also got to meet former president Bill Clinton.

The world’s first surviving set of septuplets Kenny Jr., Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon and Joel kept their parents, who already had a daughter, very busy.

According to Obsev.com the babies required an average of 52 nappies and 42 bottles of milk each day.

The couple did receive a lot of donations to help look after their babies include a 5,500 square foot home, a van, a year’s worth of Kraft’s macaroni and cheese, diapers for the first two years and full college scholarships for any state university in Iowa, as per the Daily Mail.

Their parents still worked hard to do all they could to reduce the cost of caring for 8 children and started growing their own vegetables.

Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Nathan, were diagnosed with cerebral palsy and they required the use of walkers. In 2005 Nathan had back surgery to improve his walking abilities and has since taught himself how to get around without a walker.

They graduated high school and all went on to college: Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan and Joel took up scholarships offered by private Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal in Missouri.

Kenny and Alexis chose to stay closer to home and attended Des Moines Area Community College, and Brandon enlisted in the United States Army.

The siblings who graduated from college this spring say attending college was their first taste of independence.

Kelsey said going away to college has been a growth experience for the siblings because all five are getting a taste of real independence for the first time.

“Growing up, we were always together,” Kelsey told the Herald-Whig.

“Whatever we did, wherever we went, we were always together,” added Kelsey, who majored in public relations and now hopes to get a job in the media.

“I think that being able to come to HLGU gave us our own experience to be independent and to showcase our different talents and be able to dive deep into what we want to learn and what we want our professions to be. We’re not just the seven septuplets. We’re becoming our own people.”

Older sister Mikayla got married in 2015 and the septuplets became aunts and uncles for the first time with the birth of her son. Natalie was the first of the septuplets to get married in May 2019, and four months later brother Brandon also

Nathan is majoring in computer information systems along with his brother Joel who one day hopes to work for Google in the cyber security division, while Nathan enjoys putting computers together.

“Having six siblings, we’re not only the same age but we’re all best friends,” Natalie told Today. “We’re really thankful for the friendship we have.”

These seven siblings are miracle babies and I’m so happy to see them all winning at life.

Abdul El-Sayed takes brutal swipe at Donald Trump’s marriage to Melania

 

Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is not a favorite of President Donald Trump’s. After the president made comparisons between them and their wives, El-Sayed hit back at Trump with a brutal response about his marriage to Melania.

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for the US Senate. His victory has set up what is considered to be a fierce election battle against Republican Mike Rogers, a former US representative, in one of the country’s key swing states.

The race could be hugely important for Democrats, who are hoping to take back control of the Senate from Republicans. However, last week, El-Sayed’s campaign quickly took a personal turn.

During a speech on Thursday, Donald Trump attacked the Senate candidate, calling him a “communist” and saying he was “full of shit,” which received loud cheers from the crowd.

Speaking with Sky News, El-Sayed responded to the president’s choice of words, saying, “At least I don’t let mine go in the middle of the Oval Office,” El-Sayed told Sky News.

However, it didn’t end there. On Saturday, Trump posted a side-by-side photo of himself with Melania Trump and Abdul El-Sayed with his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku.

“Yeah, he’s right,” El-Sayed told CNN when asked about the post on Sunday, adding that he and Donald Trump represent two different kinds of America.

“One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other, but join in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you – or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family and know that that family is going to have the good things.”

“A bit of a rocky road”

He continued, “So, yes, you got two different visions of America. Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries? Do you believe, when you look your kids in the eye, that they’re going to have a better future than you did?”

The Michigan Senate candidate continued, telling host Jake Tapper, “Actually, Sarah and I like each other. I don’t know about the first lady and the president, but, from what I have heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road.”

Mom’s twisted five words to husband trying to save kids before she ‘slit throats of her three children’

The quiet family home in North Dakota became the scene of an unimaginable tragedy. A 22-year-old mother, Kailey Erhart, is accused of attacking her three young children with a knife, killing two of them and leaving another seriously injured.

Kailey Erhart is facing multiple criminal charges following the horrifying incident in Mandan on August 6. According to court documents, police were called to the home after reports that children had been attacked, the NY Post reported.

When officers arrived, they found Erhart covered in blood and holding a knife to her own throat, according to investigators. She eventually dropped the weapon and reportedly begged officers to kill her.

Inside the home, police found her three children with serious injuries to their necks. The children were rushed to the hospital, but tragically, the 3-year-old girl and 5-month-old girl died from their injuries.

Her 1-year-old son survived after undergoing surgery. Authorities have not released further details about his condition. The children’s father was reportedly at the home when the terrifying situation began.

According to the affidavit, he had previously been threatened by Erhart and was in the process of separating from her. He told investigators that Erhart had recently obtained a handgun and threatened him with it.

The father managed to take the firearm from her and dismantle it, scattering the pieces so it could not be used. But the situation quickly became even more frightening.

The children’s grandmother was also inside the home, and investigators say Erhart chased both of them out with a knife before locking the door.

Then came the words that the father had apparently captured on video. According to the affidavit, Erhart was seen holding one of the children while carrying a pistol.

“Say goodbye to your children,” she allegedly told the father. Moments later, police say the children were attacked.

Police describes horrifying scene

Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler spoke about the incident and praised the officers who responded.

He described it as an “extreme, tragic and heartbreaking incident” that affected the children, their family, the community and the first responders.

“A scene like that is something that nobody should ever have to see, and the way [the officers] came through in one of the most horrific times that they’ll probably experience in their life, I’m proud,” Ziegler said, per KBTX.

“I want to acknowledge this is an extreme, tragic and heartbreaking incident for the children involved, their families, our community and first responders who arrived on scene. Our thoughts are with everyone that were impacted,” Ziegler said.

Erhart was taken into custody and is now facing nine criminal charges, including two counts of murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault. Her bond was set at $3 million in cash.

Hearing on October 6

A judge also ordered her to have no contact with surviving victims or family members. Erhart has not entered a plea.

According to investigators, she later told police that she had put the children to bed and believed their throats had already been cut. She said she did not remember what had happened, but remembered having the knife in her hands when officers arrived.

The case has left a family grieving the loss of two young children, while another remains in the hospital. Erhart is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on October 6.

Young mom gives baby X-rated name, people say it should be banned

 

A young mom’s sweet attempt to honor her grandparents completely backfired after she accidentally gave her newborn a name that some say borders “child abuse.”

At just 20 years old, a new mom had settled on a sentimental way to honor two important people in her life, taking inspiration from her grandparents, Harvey and Charlotte.

Rather than choosing one name over the other, she decided to combine them.

It was only after her baby girl had been named that the rest of the family discovered exactly what she had come up with – and according to one relative, the paperwork had already been finalized by the time they heard it.

“She named her something so horrific I cannot even call the baby it,” the woman’s cousin wrote on Reddit. “This poor child. Harlotte. HARLOTTE.”

The problem was immediately obvious to everyone else: Harlotte, a portmanteau, is frighteningly close to “harlot,” a word historically used to describe a prostitute.

And when the name was finally revealed to the family, the reaction was anything but subtle.

“My mom burst out, ‘YOU NAMED THE BABY W***???’ and my cousin started screaming. We are a loud family, but holy hell,” the original poster said, adding that she started calling the newborn “Piglet” because of her pink and “puggy nose.”

‘That’s child abuse’

Once the story made its way online, strangers had plenty of other suggestions for what the little girl could be called, with Charley, Harley, Charvey and Lottie emerging as possible escapes from the unfortunate name her mother had chosen.

“Did no one hand her a dictionary opened to the word ‘harlot’ and ask her if she really wanted to saddle her precious child with such a name?” one person asked. “I vote with everyone else, I would call the child Lottie and keep advocating for a name change.”

Others couldn’t resist pointing out just how badly the attempt to combine Harvey and Charlotte had gone.

“A baby Victorian whore. How sweet,” one netizen wrote.

“I think people inventing a name should probably do a cursory search to make sure they’re not calling their baby a whore,” a second user shared.

“You could even argue that’s child abuse, considering she named her a whore at birth,” another added.

Should some names be banned?

While much of the reaction focused on the unfortunate name itself, the conversation eventually moved beyond Harlotte and into a much bigger debate over how much freedom parents should have when naming their children.

Around the world, naming laws vary widely, with some countries restricting certain choices to protect children from bullying or social harm, preserve cultural traditions, or prevent certain titles from being used as names.

“Often, these rules are there to protect children from names that could be seen as derogatory or make life more difficult for them,” Kaomi Taylor, founder of the Museum of Names, told Today’s Parent. “In some countries, naming laws also serve as a way of preserving cherished cultural traditions and heritage.”

But according to Michael Sherrod, co-author of “Bad Baby Names: The Worst True Names Parents Saddled Their Kids With,” American parents face relatively few restrictions when choosing a name for their child.

That freedom has resulted in some extraordinary real-life examples, including Fanny Pack, Fanny Whiffer, Post Office, Warren Peace, Rubella Graves, Nice Carr, and Hell Hellickson.

“A lot of parents say they want their kids to be unique. They think it’s fun and differentiates their child from everyone else, and gives them a personality,” Sherrod told BBC News.

“Americans are also very proprietary about their children and take the attitude, ‘We can do whatever with our children and if they don’t like it, they can change it when they’re older.’”

Bad names potentially considered child abuse

Despite acknowledging that particularly offensive names could potentially be considered a form of child abuse, Sherrod wasn’t convinced that more legislation was necessarily the answer.

“I’m not saying courts should not intervene, but I would prefer they do so only when parents cannot agree and the item gets taken to court,” he told the outlet.

“I think, for the most part, parents are pretty good at compromise. I would say, anecdotal evidence is that the number of cases considered abusive is so tiny as to not require much law, if any.”

John Goodman unrecognizable in new photo after years of dramatic weight loss

 

A new photo of John Goodman is making people do a double take, with the 74-year-old actor looking “so skinny” and “unrecognizable” after his dramatic weight loss.

For viewers who remember Goodman as Dan Conner on Roseanne, Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski, or from the many other roles that have made him a familiar face for decades, the actor was once known for his much heavier frame.

In fact, Goodman, who stars as the loveable Sully in Monsters, Inc., once tipped the scales at close to 400 pounds and previously admitted that he would lose large amounts of weight before eventually slipping back into the same habits and gaining it again.

“I’d get off of Roseanne every spring. I’d lose 60 pounds every spring,” he told David Letterman in 2010, per People. “I’d gain it back and then some, every year. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

‘Eating alcoholically’

That same year, however, he had lost more than 100 pounds after cutting sugar from his diet and committing to regular exercise, while working out six days a week. He had also stopped drinking alcohol three years earlier, People reports.

“I’m breaking a sweat but I’m not going nuts,” he told the outlet. “I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste. It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next…I wanted to live life better.”

The Flintstones star later explained that instead of chasing another dramatic short-term drop on the scale, he wanted to make healthy changes he could maintain.

“I just stopped eating all the time,” Goodman said in an interview with ABC News. “I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically.”

“In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a 6-pack of Bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits,” he shared.

‘Sick and tired of looking at myself’

Looking back at the cycle he had fallen into, Goodman admitted that losing weight had never been the only problem – keeping it off was another matter entirely.

“This time I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, because work is very draining.”

The motivation behind that change went deeper than simply wanting to see a different number on the scale.

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous,” Goodman said.

Over the years, those changes have seen Goodman lose around 200 pounds, transforming the appearance audiences had grown accustomed to seeing throughout his career.

And his latest appearance shows just how dramatic that transformation has been.

‘He’s so skinny’

In early August, Goodman crossed paths with fellow actor David DeLuise at a grocery store, where the pair stopped to take a photo together before DeLuise shared the encounter on Instagram.

DeLuise, who played Jerry Russo on Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place,” was clearly thrilled by the chance meeting, smiling beside a noticeably slimmer Goodman as the two posed in one of the store’s aisles.

“He was my childhood!! Legend!” DeLuise wrote alongside the photo on Instagram. “I love that I get to say that to someone ;), if you know you know.”

Goodman’s much slimmer appearance quickly caught the attention of people in the comments.

“Is that john Goodman? He’s unrecognizable,” one user shared in the comment section.

If You Clean Your Kitchen With Bleach, You Need To Know This

 

At my first restaurant job, we wiped the kitchen down with bleach water at the end of every shift. I’d go home and my hands smelled of an odd mix of feta cheese and bleach.

We didn’t have much of a method; we just dumped some bleach in a bucket of water and went at it. It wasn’t until years later that I learned you can’t just eyeball it with bleach. If you don’t follow a few key guidelines, your work is wasted.

If you use bleach in your kitchen, memorize these simple rules.

Bleach Is for Disinfecting, Not Cleaning
First off, know what bleach is good for. It doesn’t really clean a kitchen. It disinfects it. Cleaning removes dirt and schmutz; disinfecting removes germs.

“It’s important to know that bleach is a strong sanitizer, not a surfactant like soap,” says Alex Varela, a cleaning expert with Oakville Maids, a cleaning service in Ontario, Canada. “This means it’s more useful for disinfecting than surface cleaning. You don’t need to use it everywhere, just on the areas that are in direct contact with food.”

Bleach Water Isn’t Shelf Stable
Probably the biggest rule with bleach water is to not mix it in advance. Its effectiveness deteriorates quickly, so if you’re using old bleach water, why even bother? In general, mix up a new solution for every cleaning session.

A spray bottle can be handy, but to be safe, dump the bleach water from it once you’re done. Or just mix up your bleach water solution in the sink. Not only does this ensure you’ll drain it in a timely manner—as a bonus, it disinfects the sink.

Use the Right Ratios
Different ratios of bleach and water work better for specific tasks. Also, because you can get bleach in both regular and concentrated forms, the ratios aren’t always the same from product to product.

“The best source is definitely going to the official website for each product,” says Varela. “Sometimes bleach dilution ratios are on the bottle, but it’s mostly for bathrooms and related to hygiene, not so much to food areas.”

Varela recommends the following ratios:

For countertops and cutting boards: Use two tablespoons of bleach for each gallon of water. “This is good because it has disinfecting power but without being too abrasive on these surfaces. For cutting boards, wash the board, then scrub with a bristle brush and the bleach solution for two minutes. Rinse with hot water and air dry.”
For sponges: Use three tablespoons of bleach per four cups of water. “Let them soak for five minutes before rinsing well and set aside to air dry.”
