Trump Oversaw Record Oil, Gas Production in 2025: Report

President Donald Trump oversaw high levels of domestic energy production in 2025, including significant offshore oil output, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. Last year, the department reported a record level of 714 million barrels of offshore oil production.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the figures reflect expanded energy development and increased utilization of domestic resources. “President Trump has made it clear that America should fully develop its abundant energy resources in a way that strengthens our economy and benefits American families,” Burgum said in a statement.

“By providing regulatory certainty, streamlining processes and encouraging responsible development, this administration is unlocking the full potential of our domestic energy resources — supporting job creation, lowering energy prices, strengthening energy security and maintaining strong safety and environmental protections,” he added.

The release notes that the administration’s policies, which focus on regulatory efficiency and providing energy developers with greater certainty, have resulted in a surge in offshore project investment. This increase in investment is particularly significant in the Gulf of America.

“American energy leadership is a cornerstone of our economic strength and national security,” Burgum noted. “This record production reflects the hard work of American energy workers and the strength of our offshore resources, helping drive economic growth, support good-paying jobs and deliver affordable, reliable energy to families and businesses.”

The record energy production makes good on one of Trump’s core campaign promises in the 2024 cycle. In February 2023, when he was the lone candidate in the Republican field, he pledged to “bring back a pro-American energy policy at long last.”

“I will deploy a team of warrior lawyers to hunt down every unnecessary regulation in the federal registry that hampers domestic production, and we will wipe them off the books,” he said at the time.

“Nobody has more liquid gold under their feet than the United States of America, and we will use it and profit by it and live with it, and we will be rich again, and we will be happy again and will be proud again,” Trump added.

In a major geopolitical and economic development, Japan signaled two weeks ago that it will expand purchases of American oil and energy as part of $56 billion in new agreements announced at the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Forum in Tokyo.

Burgum revealed the deals during the forum, which brought together Asia-Pacific allies to coordinate energy security strategies amid the ongoing Iran war and global supply instability.

Under the leadership of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Tokyo is deepening its energy alignment with Washington at a time when oil markets remain volatile and the Strait of Hormuz faces continued disruption threats.

Burgum emphasized that the agreements underscore the U.S. strategy of supplying energy to allies rather than allowing adversarial nations to dominate critical supply chains.

“The United States of America has the ability to deliver freedom of navigation and free supplies,” Burgum said during the forum. He added that the U.S. has “effectively displaced two-thirds of the Russian gas in all of Western Europe,” framing American energy exports as both economic leverage and strategic deterrence.

The total value of the announced investments was initially placed at $56 billion but was later revised upward to $57 billion after an additional agreement was finalized following the conference’s close.

Japan, which relies on the Middle East for roughly 90% of its oil imports, has been particularly exposed to the war-driven turbulence in the Gulf. That vulnerability has accelerated Tokyo’s push to diversify supply sources — with American oil and liquefied natural gas playing an expanding role.
