Air travel brings together people from all walks of life, which is why simple courtesy can make a big difference. One of the most common complaints on flights today is passengers playing music, videos, or games out loud on their phones without headphones. The habit, sometimes jokingly called “barebeating,” can quickly disturb the quiet environment many travelers expect.
As in-flight internet becomes faster and more available, more passengers are streaming movies, listening to music, and playing games during flights. Because of this, airlines are paying closer attention to how device use affects the cabin experience.
To address the issue, United Airlines updated its Refusal of Transport policy. The new rule says passengers who refuse to use headphones while playing audio or video may be considered disruptive. In more serious situations, travelers could even be denied boarding or removed from a flight.
The airline now places loud device use in the same category as other disruptive behavior, such as ignoring crew instructions or boarding while intoxicated. While using headphones has always been considered polite, the airline says the rule is being emphasized more as onboard internet services continue to expand.
Many travelers support the update, saying headphones should already be standard in shared spaces. Flight attendants also say they are reminding passengers more often to lower their device volume. In the end, the message is simple: if you want to enjoy entertainment during your flight, bring headphones so everyone around you can travel comfortably.
