Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are now known as fierce political opponents, but their relationship once appeared far more cordial. In 2005, Clinton attended Trump’s wedding to Melania at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, where the two were photographed smiling together alongside their spouses, Bill Clinton and Melania Trump. The image showed Trump with his arm around Clinton as the couples posed for a celebratory photo. Interestingly, the same Mar-a-Lago property later became the location of Trump’s victory speech during the 2016 Republican primary season.
During that speech, Trump made clear who he viewed as his main opponent in the upcoming general election, declaring, “I’m going to go after one person: Hillary Clinton.” He also referenced her attendance at his wedding during the first Republican presidential debate when questioned about his past political donations. Trump remarked that he had invited Clinton to the ceremony and that she attended, joking that she “had no choice” because he had contributed to a foundation connected to her. Reports later suggested that Trump may have donated up to $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation after the wedding. A spokesperson for Clinton’s campaign at the time, Jennifer Palmieri, downplayed the connection between the two, describing them simply as acquaintances. She noted that Trump had invited Clinton and that their social interaction had long been known. Palmieri also suggested Clinton may have been offended by Trump’s implication that she attended only because of his donations.
