My partner insisted on paying the bill – I regret letting him do that
When Eric demanded payment for our first date, I thought I'd met a true aristocrat. Roses, a sweet gift, interesting conversation—he examined every box. When he texted me the next day, I expected a pleasant follow-up, but when I read his message, my stomach dropped.
My best friend, Mia, had good intentions when she agreed to set me up on a date, but her skills as a matchmaker remained completely untested.
"He's super nice, Kelly! A true gentleman. You'll love him," Mia insisted over the phone as I rummaged through my closet.
“You’ve never asked me out before,” I reminded her. “What made you think you knew my type?”
"Because I know you better than anyone," she replied cheerfully. "Besides, Chris vouches for him too. They've been friends for years."
This got me thinking. Chris, Mia's boyfriend, was a pretty good judge of character. If he considered this Eric honorable, maybe there was hope.
“Okay,” I sighed. “At least show me a picture.”
A moment later, an incoming message appeared on my phone.
The guy in the photo wasn't ugly: he was neat, well-dressed, and had a warm smile that caught the eye.
“Okay, he’s cute,” I admitted.
"I told you!" Mia informed him. "Text him and make an appointment. You won't regret it, I promise."
After a few casual messages, I agreed to meet Erik for dinner at a new Italian restaurant with a beautiful view of the river. Nothing special, but pleasant enough for a first date.
I arrived five minutes early and waited by the entrance, as we'd agreed. I was anxiously examining my appearance with my phone camera when I saw him approaching the restaurant.
My heart rate quickened slightly. The photo didn't lie—he was attractive in that clean, casual, businesslike way, and he moved with confidence.
However, I did not expect that he would find a bouquet of roses in his hand.
Not cheap flowers from the grocery store, but a real professional arrangement tied with a ribbon.
“You must be Kelly,” he said. “This is for you.”
“Wow, thank you,” I replied. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“I thought I’d start the evening off right,” he said.
But that's not all.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small gift box tied with a cyan bow.
“What is this?” I asked.
"Just something small. Open it," he agreed.
Inside was an elegant silver keychain engraved with the letter "K." It was graceful and individual, requiring consideration.
“Something special for you,” he said. “I asked Mia what you would like.”
Honestly, I was impressed. Flowers and a thoughtful gift on a first date? This man was clearly making it clear he was someone. He was either interested or the king of first impressions.
“That’s really kind of you,” I said. “Thank you.”
Eric continued his gentlemanly routine without a moment’s respite. He opened the door, pulled out my chair, and maintained eye contact with me throughout our conversation.
“So what made you agree to this arrangement?” he asked after we had ordered our meals.
“Mia can be very persuasive,” I laughed. “Besides, she and Chris vouched for you, which is rare.”
“They make a great couple,” he nodded.
"Chris and I have known each other since college. He's always been a decent guy."
From that point on the conversation flowed naturally.
We discovered common interests in true crime podcasts and documentaries about weird subcultures.
He told funny anecdotes about his job as a marketing manager, and I found myself thinking that this might be the best first date of my life.
When the check arrived, I reached for my wallet.
“Absolutely not,” said Eric.
“The man pays on the first date.”
His tone surprised me a bit. It wasn't just gallant, but firm, almost as if he were reciting an unbreakable rule.
I paused for half a second, then shouted, "Okay, if you insist. Thank you."
I wasn't about to argue about a free meal, especially after such a pleasant evening. We left together, and he asked if he could call me soon.
“I would like to,” I replied.
He hugged me goodbye (the perfect blend of friendliness and interest without being rude).
The next morning, I woke up to a notification from Eric. My sleepy brain anticipated a sweet, "I had a great time," but instead I saw an attachment.
I made some coffee and went back to bed. Curious, I opened it, expecting a photo from a restaurant or something equally innocuous.
At the top, in bold, professional font:
Date invoice – one outstanding amount.
Below was a detailed summary of the services provided and the associated fees.
At first I thought it was some kind of joke, some bizarre attempt at humor that didn't quite hit the mark. But when I read it, it almost made me crave my morning coffee again.
The so-called services he listed were completely absurd, which made me appreciate his gentlemanly charm in a whole new way.
Bouquet of Roses: One Hug
Personalized Keychain Gift: One Coffee Meeting (organized within a week)
Opening the car door: a cute group selfie.
Pulling out a chair: Holding hands on your next date.
Engaging Conversation and Active Listening: A Compliment on My Appearance
Full Dinner + Tip Included: A No-Excuses Second Date.
But the real catch, the part that made me realize he meant it when he sent that invoice, was written in bold at the bottom.
Payment is due in full. Refunds are not possible. Failure to do so may result in the outstanding balance being placed in collections (Chris will be notified of this).
We expect quick payment!
My jaw dropped to the floor.
Just anticipating financial compensation would be bad enough, but burdening me with the required sensitivity and attention? Who does that?
I immediately took a screenshot of the invoice and sent it to Mia. Her response was quick.
"OH. MY. GOD. THIS IS WHAT I'M SHOWING TO CHRIS."
“Is this real life???” I replied. “He's serious!”
"Wait until Chris sees this. He'll go crazy," she replied.
Five minutes later, my phone rang.
It was Chris, roaring with laughter.
“Kelly, I can’t believe it,” he replied. “I’ve known this guy for years, and I never, not once, thought he would do something this crazy.”
“So this isn't a joke?” I asked.
“No way,” Chris replied. “Eric has always been a little… busy dating, but this is next level. Okay, we need to get revenge on this guy.”
Chris was a mastermind of meticulousness of the highest order.
Instead of simply criticizing Eric in the group chat, he was going to take it a step further.
“I’m issuing the same invoice,” he announced. “Same formatting, fake legalese, absurd fees, the whole lot.”

“This is perfect,” I texted him. “Send it!”
“Forwarded!” he replied a moment later.
Soon after, my phone was flooded with a series of increasingly angry messages from Eric.
“Wow, really mature.”
"I was just trying to set realistic expectations; not everyone is rich."
“Chris is a terrible friend.”
“You just missed a GREAT guy.”
I didn't bother getting into a discussion. What could I say to someone who believed that human interaction was based on transactions? I simply sent him a thumbs-up emoji and blocked his number.
Mia called me later that evening, still giggling about the whole thing.
“I’m so sorry,” she said. “Honestly, I thought he was normal. Chris didn’t realize he was normal either.”
“Don’t worry,” I said, surprising myself with how relaxed I felt. “At least we all had a great story out of it.”
“True,” she agreed. “That will officially be repeated at every party for the next decade.”
This whole incident taught me one golden rule of dating: if a guy insists on paying, make sure he doesn't send you an invoice later.
And what about that keychain? I kept it. Not because it reminded me of Eric, but because it was a fun souvenir of the most extraordinary day in my life.
