Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Rusty Pan

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Rusty Pan

Step 1: Place the rusty pan in an empty sink or on a protected countertop. Make sure the pan is completely cool before cleaning.

Step 2: Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of baking soda generously over all the rusty areas, making sure every rust spot is covered.

Step 3: Slowly pour 1 cup of white vinegar over the baking soda. The mixture will fizz as it reacts with the rust. Let it sit undisturbed for 10–15 minutes to help loosen the rust.

Step 4: Add 3–5 drops of Dawn dish soap directly onto the pan. This helps lift grease and dirt while you scrub.

Step 5: Dip a non-scratch scouring sponge into a bowl of warm soapy water and scrub the pan using firm circular motions. Pay extra attention to heavily rusted areas and continue scrubbing for 3–5 minutes.

Step 6: If stubborn rust remains, sprinkle a little more baking soda onto those spots and continue scrubbing until the rust starts lifting.

Step 7: Rinse the pan thoroughly under warm running water, making sure all the baking soda, vinegar, soap, and loosened rust are washed away.

Step 8: Inspect the pan. If you still see rust, repeat the process once more. Older or heavily rusted pans may need two or three treatments.

Step 9: Immediately dry the pan completely with a clean microfiber cloth or paper towels. Moisture left on the surface can cause rust to return quickly.

Step 10: To help protect the pan from future rust, apply a very thin layer of cooking oil over the clean, dry surface using a paper towel before storing it in a dry place.

Tip: This method is suitable for carbon steel or uncoated steel pans. Do not use it on non-stick pans, as aggressive scrubbing can damage the non-stick coating
